Where to Retire Magazine
NATCHITOCHES – Where to Retire magazine has selected Natchitoches, La. to profile as a top retirement town in the September/October issue of its magazine, which mails to subscribers nationwide on Aug. 1. Read the full article here (PDF).
Mary Lu Abbott, editor of Where to Retire magazine, said Natchitoches had many of the qualities that are important to today’s retirees. “The oldest continuously inhabited town in Louisiana, Natchitoches has a 33-block historic district, and the nearby Cane River National Heritage Area showcases well-maintained plantations and other historical buildings. Boating is a popular pastime on Cane River Lake, Sibley Lake and nearly Black Lake, and houses and businesses dot the waters’ banks. Northwestern State University offers residents access to arts and sporting events, continuing education courses and the college’s Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center with fitness equipment, a natatorium and sports facilities. The annual Christmas Festival draws thousands of visitors each year, and the Southern charm of this old town turns many tourists into full-time residents,” Abbott said.
According to the magazine, 700,000 Americans move to new towns each year to retire.
